How Long Does Carpet Cleaning Take?

On-site time, dry time, and what happens at each step. Straight answers from a family business that has done this since 1980.

Quick Answer

Carpet cleaning with Chesapeake Carpet Care takes 90 minutes to 2 hours on-site for a standard three-room job. Whole-house jobs with 5 to 6 rooms take 3 to 4 hours. Dry time after hot-water extraction is 4 to 6 hours under normal conditions, with light sock-foot traffic safe within 2 to 4 hours. Humid Baltimore summers can extend dry time to 6 to 8 hours. Running ceiling fans or your HVAC system speeds things up considerably. Chesapeake Carpet Care has been a family business in the Baltimore area since 1980, and Jesse performs every job personally from pre-spray through post-groom.

Heavily soiled carpet or pet-damaged areas add time because those sections require more passes and pre-treatment. Jesse walks through the space before starting and gives you a realistic time estimate based on what he sees.

Step-by-step: what happens during a cleaning

1. Pre-inspection (5 to 10 minutes)

Jesse checks the carpet for stains, damage, pet spots, and high-traffic areas. He identifies any sections that need pre-treatment beyond the standard pre-spray and flags anything that may require managing your expectations, like permanent staining or carpet damage that cleaning cannot reverse.

2. Pre-spray (10 to 15 minutes including dwell time)

A cleaning solution is applied to the carpet to begin breaking down soil and loosening stains before the extraction step. The product dwells for 5 to 10 minutes depending on soil level. We use eco-friendly, biodegradable chemistry on every job.

3. Hot-water extraction (the main cleaning phase)

Our truck-mounted equipment injects hot water at high pressure into the carpet fiber and extracts it along with suspended soil and cleaning solution. The truck-mounted system is significantly more powerful than portable machines, which means more soil is removed and less moisture is left in the carpet, shortening dry time. This is the step that delivers the before-and-after result.

4. Spot treatment (as needed)

Stubborn stains, pet spots, and set-in marks get focused spot treatment after the main extraction pass. Not every job requires this step, but it adds 10 to 20 minutes when it does.

5. Post-groom (5 to 10 minutes)

A finishing rake resets the carpet pile direction for even drying and a consistent appearance. This is included on every job at Chesapeake Carpet Care, not a paid add-on.

Dry time: what to expect

Dry time depends on three factors: carpet thickness and fiber type, humidity, and airflow. Here is what to expect under typical Baltimore area conditions:

On humid summer days in Baltimore, dry time trends toward the longer end of these ranges. Running ceiling fans, opening windows (when outdoor humidity is lower than indoor), or running your HVAC system at a moderate setting speeds things up significantly. We time our appointments so your carpets are at minimum usable before your next obligation.

Thicker carpets and plush pile hold more moisture than low-pile or Berber. If you have high-pile carpet in a humid month, plan for 6 to 8 hours before normal traffic.

How timing compares to the competition

Franchise cleaners running portable machines often leave more moisture in the carpet because portable equipment has less suction power than truck-mounted systems. This can extend dry time to 12 to 24 hours and sometimes leads to mold or mildew issues in humid conditions. Our truck-mounted equipment extracts more water upfront, resulting in shorter dry times and less risk. See how we compare overall on our us vs Stanley Steemer page.

Does weather or season affect how long cleaning takes?

The on-site cleaning time does not change with weather. But dry time is affected by humidity. Baltimore summers are humid, which slows evaporation. Running your HVAC on a moderate setting or pointing fans at the carpet after we leave shortens the dry window. In winter, heated dry indoor air actually speeds drying faster than summer conditions.

Can I be home during the cleaning?

Yes. Most clients are home during the job. Jesse works room-by-room and explains what he is doing if you have questions. You do not need to hover, but you are welcome to watch. Many people find the before-and-after satisfying to see in real time.

What slows down a carpet cleaning job?

Heavy soil, set-in pet stains, very thick or high-pile carpet, and large open-plan rooms all add time. A room that has not been professionally cleaned in 4 or 5 years will take more passes than a room cleaned annually. Jesse accounts for this during the walk-through and adjusts the time estimate accordingly.
